mp3: The Hole in Your Roof

Dear Augie March,

Augie MarchSo, last night I was reading page 25 out of a billion for my pop culture class, and I came across a section on freud. The author was talking about dreams and how dreams are used to assimilate external stimuli into an unconscious state so you wouldn’t lose any sleep. I found this quite fascinating — especially because I always wondered how songs that came on the alarm clock radio could suddenly become an integral part of my bedtime narratives.

Similarly, I have been listening to “Hole in Your Roof” as I fall off to sleep for several years. It is track 2 on my ipod mix “Go to Sleep!!” (not to be confused with my older, less effective bedtime mix “Go to sleep sucker!!”). This song does the trick every time. The beginning comes in like a wave of ether, washing me over with discontent for Prime Minister Howard. I always seem to be half awake as the song builds up to it’s unbelievable climax. However, if I do fall asleep before this point (or during the album leaf song that is track 1) this climax can become the background music for any number of wonderful stories. I could be fighting with a magical dragon while on the back of a unicorn, or conversely, fighting with the australian government about land rights (I don’t know if that is what this song is about, but aren’t most aussie songs about that?). Either way, the amount of rock that you put into this portion of the song never deters me from my true goal of sleep. And then gently, as the outro begins, I am lowered back into my bed to fall asleep for one more night.

Good Night,

Rob
