The Go Find

mp3:What I Want

Dear The Go Find,

the go findAs a part of my break-up with Death Cab, I have also given up Ben’s electro side project The Postal Service (although I do have a soft spot in my heart for that Feist remix). On the rebound, I have been listening to other electo-pop projects — Particularly those that are in someway related to the Notwist and those that reside on the German label Morr (it is very easy to be both of these things). I had heard how great your album Miami was and decided to give it a listen. Let me just say, it is great. I like it much better than Styrofoam’s Nothings Lost (which I bought because of a Ben Gibbard connection), and much better than any album I have heard of Michael Bolton, Kenny G, or Christoper Cross. I only mention those last three because there are some times where I can’t help but feel like I am listening to an adult contemporary record. I think it really has to do with the opening to “What I want” — I feel as if Richard Marx is going to come shortly there after with a raspy croon. And to tell the truth there isn’t much difference between the elements of this song and those of the famous Marx brother. Your vocals are subdued, you are whining about some girl, and there are reverb drenched stringed instruments in the back. The only difference, however, is the most important. Just when I think you and Richard are the same, you diverge and break out with one of those endings that totally floors me (my favorite thing ever).

Thanks for that,

Rob

I couldn’t agree more. Their songs consist beats and melodies that might sound a bit cheesy at times but they always seem to surprise me with amazing endings and hooks that will blow you away.
    Great post!
