The Boy Who Could Fly

First, let me complement you for having one of my favorite band names ever. There was a period when I really wanted to have a band that was directly named after a movie. I was tired of tired pop culture references in band names (i.e. Nerf Herder - not that anything happened with that band) and instead wanted to go straight for the jugular. As a result I almost called one band Total Recall, Jurassic Park, or Star Wars — in the end, we settled for The Karate Kid. The name, however direct it was, was short lived and we soon decided to change it. I then wanted to go back to using tired pop culture references, this time doubling them up with my band Sweep the Leg, Yanni. Anyway, back to you. While the Boy Who Could Fly is a direct reference to a movie from the 80’s, the film’s story and it’s name also hold a great amount of sincere desire to be something more than just a movie. The film held kind of a mysticism about it, (caution, spoilers ahead!) and when you found out that the boy could actually fly, you couldn’t help but cheer and ask yourself deep reaching questions about yourself and those around you.
I’ve always felt the same way about you and your music. You are never one to promote yourself. You can be so unassuming, especially when you play a show, as you for the most part do not use a microphone. I remember the first time I heard “The Trash That is My Treasure” — I believe it was at the house show at Dave Wooley’s house. And while I had always been a fan of your musical endeavors (The Farewell Bikeride, Pop Cult Murders), there was nothing to prepare me for this song. It has such a simple structure (as most of your songs do), but by the time you struck the final “Don’t Worry Baby”, there was hardly a dry eye in the room (sorry, I guess I can’t extrapolate). Just like the movie from which you take your name, your music is earnest in its attempt to lift those that listen to it.
Godspeed,
Rob
