Whitest Boy Alive

mp3: Burning

Dear Whitest Boy Alive (the band, not the kid from that movie Powder),

Whitest Boy AliveSo as you may recall, I was quite obsessed with a member of your band for a while. No it wasn’t a creepy stalker kind of thing, I was just convinced for about a period of six months that anything he touched turned to gold. I first heard Erlend singing on “Winning a Battle but Losing a War” at a listening kiosk in Borders. I had never heard anything so soft before — the whole song felt like a pillow, or a marshmallow — and I wanted to be in love. That album still kicks my trash to this day. “Summer on the Westhill” was on every mix cd I made for about a period of 2 years.

I think the final stake was laid when I heard Erlend’s DJ Kicks album. That cd exposed me to so many incredible songs (minus that really really dirty one that is stuck in the middle), and showed me his versatility as a both a musician and a singer. After that I was hooked into everything he did. I wanted to move to Bergen, I wanted to shop at IKEA, I wanted to play with legos and I wanted to become a socialist (I still want to do many of those things).

So I am glad to see that Erlend is back laying down some hot crap. I am convinced that “Burning” could possibly be a perfect song. The instrumentation is light and delicate like a good Kings of Convenience song — but at the same time it is succinct and purposeful. And the ending has one of those qualities that I wish all songs had — that it would never end.

Rob
